Description:
Medium-sized to large, dark tit with short peaked crest and bright white cheeks. Has variable rufous wash to white nape and rufous patch on sides of breast. From 'Spot-winged' by larger size, uniform wings, and more extensive black bib. Juvenile has shorter crest; mantle and belly are suffused with brown and black bib is duller.
Distribution:
Common resident and altitudinal migrant in the western half of Gilgit-Baltistan, absent from Baltistan region. Found in conifer and mixed forests of spruce, fir, deodar, pine and juniper at 1500-3500m; also poplar, willow, birch and cultivations.
Behavior:
Forages at all levels, from tops of trees to undergrowth, and frequently on ground. Uses cracks in bark or branches as regular 'anvils' in which it places seeds and nuts, opening these by hammering them rapidly with the bill. Food mostly small invertebrates, seeds and berries; nestlings fed entirely with insects and larvae.
